As International Women’s Day approaches on Saturday 8 March, we reflect on the incredible strides women are making across all industries, and the world of golf is no exception!
Here, we shine a spotlight on one of our very own women in golf, 22-year-old Zoe Powell from X-Golf South Bank…
From Course to Community: How X-Golf Helped Zoe Find Her Swing Again
For many women, golf can feel like an exclusive club – intimidating, sometimes isolating and not always accessible.
But for Zoe, a passionate golfer from Gympie, finding her place in the game took time, a few bumps along the way and an unexpected twist that reignited her love for the sport.
Zoe’s journey with golf started young. At just five years old, she was tagging along with her dad to his lessons and swinging clubs at the local course.
Growing up in an area where junior female golfers were numbered, Zoe quickly realised that golf was a different kind of challenge for her than it was for her male counterparts.
“There were no other juniors or younger women at my club at the time, and we struggled to make teams for things like state championships and junior pennants. It was hard to find a community to connect with,” Zoe said.
When she made the move to Brisbane, things didn’t get any easier…
“I struggled to get back into golf because I just didn’t have the time and I didn’t have anyone to play with,” she said.
A New Way to Play
It was a rainy day when Zoe and her dad stumbled across X-Golf.
What started as a way to avoid the rain turned into something much more significant for Zoe – it was a reconnection with golf and, as she soon found out, a way to connect with a community of like-minded women.
“X-Golf helped me get back into the sport I love,” she said.
“But what I didn’t expect was how much it helped me make new friends who are also passionate about golf, many of them around my age. That’s been amazing.”
For Zoe, X-Golf offered both a new way to play as well as a welcoming environment where women could enjoy the game without pressure.
“I’ve met so many amazing people who are all about supporting each other and enjoying the game,” she said.
The Future of Golf’s Females
With International Women’s Day coming up on 8 March, Zoe’s story is a reminder of how far we’ve come in making golf an inclusive space for women.
